Ecology, computation, and creative form grew together in Howard's work.

Howard Pearlmutter has applied information tools to environmental and whole-systems concerns through simulation, graphics, software, architecture, learning, and advisory.

His early paid software work included electricity-substation design and cost estimation. Research included atmospheric modeling and parallel computing for NASA Ames, and computational fluid dynamics at MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science.

The human question led to a 700-page NASA study, Interactive Computer Graphics: The Human Interface to Dynamic Simulation. Read the story.

His graphics work included original modeling and rendering software for Buckminster Fuller's architectural geometry, producing animation seen in Ecological Design: Inventing the Future. Explore the contribution.

CAD and GIS work connected maps and blueprints with digital tools. Educational software included an energy-conservation videogame for Disney EPCOT. Read maps and blueprints and the EPCOT story.

Later applications supported renewable-energy adoption and grid-connection processes, and tracking environmental impacts through supply chains and product lifecycles. Explore renewable information and lifecycle relationships.

The environmental practice also reached into community, communication, distributed work, and creative gatherings. In 1995, David Brower convened an occasion for environmental leaders to hear Howard on organizing for an ecologically healthy economy and offered an emphatic endorsement of his vision. Read Brower's words.

Howard's broader development and consulting clients include NASA, Apple, Disney, Xerox, HP, Kodak, CBS, Fujitsu, CSC, Capital One, Symantec, and the Financial Times. More than 200 engagements, primarily through his own companies, have joined practical systems with people and purpose.

His current practice continues to connect software, AI-assisted development, knowledge, media, and human understanding.

For your own undertaking, the relevant combination might support visual inquiry, a learning session, or a practical model, prototype, or system.

Start with what needs to become more intelligible. The opportunity is to make creative technology serve a relationship worth understanding.
